KUCHING: Thousands of Christians flocked to churches and chapels in the city to attend the Good Friday services today.
Good Friday is a day when Christians all over the world remember the passion, suffering, and crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
It was observed that most of the services here were held from 3pm onward, with faithful people attending the service.
One of the churches that saw a huge crowd was St. Joseph’s Cathedral at Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg here.
The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Kuching, Most Reverend Simon Poh, delivered the service in English.
During the service, Catholics also went up to the front of the church and bowed before the cross. They were still not allowed to kiss the cross as part of the standard operating procedure (SOP) to contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
Meanwhile, Poh, in a statement, said that on Good Friday, Jesus was forgiving those who had crucified him and teaching his disciples to do likewise.
“God is love! Christians are called to love others as Jesus has loved them. I believe that when we truly forgive and love one another, we will build a harmonious society.
“By moving from tolerance to mutual acceptance and respect, we can all ensure the harmony and unity among all races, cultures, and religions in Sarawak and bring blessings to our nation, Malaysia, and beyond,” he said.
He also said Good Friday is also a day of fasting and abstinence from meat for Catholics.
“In solidarity, I take this opportunity to wish all our Muslim brothers and sisters who are fasting in Ramadan.
“Good Friday and Easter Blessings to all Christians and friends of good will,” he said.
