KUCHING: The board of management of Chung Hua Middle Schools No. 1, 3 and 4 supports the Ministry of Education’s (MoE) warning against sexual harassment by teachers and school staff, where those found guilty would be sacked.
Its chairman Datuk Richard Wee said it is definitely a good move by the government to be firm and determined in addressing sexual harassment issues in schools.
“I hope the ministry has the will to enforce the directive and policy.
“With firm enforcement, all the students will have proper protection against such abuse and treatment by the minority irresponsible and perverted teachers who take advantage of the students,” he told New Sarawak Tribune.
Wee thus said he definitely echoes and supports the Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek for her determination in tackling cases of sexual harassment.
On March 16, Fadhlina said it was important to issue such warnings so that people understand that the MoE is serious in preventing sexual harassment in schools.
Speaking at the Convention on the Protection of Students from Sexual Exploitation, she said she was concerned about the rising trend of sexual harassment against children, both boys and girls.
The ministry has also launched a ‘Safe School Programme’ to create a learning environment free of sexual harassment, including through guidelines and more resources in the form of counsellors.
