KUCHING: Sarawak, with its rich tapestry of cultures, landscapes and history, stands at a crucial juncture in its development.

As we look towards the future, it is essential to understand the hopes and aspirations of its diverse population.

By listening to voices from different age groups and ethnic backgrounds, we can gain a holistic view of the collective vision for Sarawak.

New Sarawak Tribune spoke to the pubic to get their views on their hopes for Sarawak in conjunction with Sarawak Day.

SUSANNA PETER, 37, ADMIN ASSISTANT
I hope Sarawak continues to develop its infrastructure and technology. I want to see more job opportunities for young people, especially in the tech and creative industries. Improving internet connectivity in rural areas is crucial for education and business growth.

I would love to see more recreational facilities and public spaces where people can gather and enjoy themselves. It is important to have safe and accessible areas for sports, arts, and cultural activities.
I envision Sarawak becoming a hub for sustainable tourism. We have rich natural resources and beautiful landscapes that should be preserved and promoted. Eco-friendly initiatives can bring in revenue while protecting the environment.

SIA EE,37, ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER
I hope for a balanced development that respects both urban and rural areas. Ensuring that rural communities have access to quality healthcare, education, and basic amenities is essential.

Improving public transportation is a priority. Efficient and reliable transport systems can ease daily commutes and reduce traffic congestion, benefiting everyone.

I would like to see more support for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). They are the backbone of our economy and need better access to funding, training, and markets.

Encouraging cultural exchange programmes can help us appreciate the richness of our heritage. Schools and community centres can play a big role in promoting these activities.

ALLEN LIEW TZE SIONG, 24, FOOD DELIVERY SERVICE
My hope is for Sarawak to maintain its cultural heritage and traditions. Our unique identity should be preserved while we progress.

I would like to see better healthcare facilities, especially for the elderly. Access to quality medical care in rural areas is still lacking and needs improvement.

Supporting agriculture and local crafts is important. These sectors provide livelihoods for many and should be nurtured through modern techniques and fair-trade practices.

Education should emphasise our local history and traditions. Teaching the younger generation about their roots is as important as academic excellence.

Inter-generational programmes can help bridge the gap between the old and the young. Sharing stories and customs can foster respect and understanding among different age groups.

TEDY JIHOK, 37, OPERATION ASSISTANT
I hope Sarawak becomes a leader in sustainable living. Initiatives like green energy, conservation programmes, and waste management can set an example for others.

More community-driven projects can empower locals. Participatory planning in development projects ensures that the needs and voices of the community are heard.

I want to see an education system that nurtures critical thinking and creativity. Incorporating more hands-on learning experiences can prepare students for real-world challenges.

Hosting cultural festivals that celebrate all ethnic groups can promote unity. These events can educate people about different traditions and foster a sense of pride in our diverse heritage.

OMAR BASRI, 69, BUSINESSMAN
Hopes and aspirations of the people of Sarawak must be upheld. It is therefore very important for us to have good leadership in Sarawak. With good leaders Sarawak will continue to shape our economy, development such as roads and other amenities so the people will have better lives in the future.

We need leaders who are capable and trusted to strategically plan and implement developments that best suit Sarawak. We hope to see our leaders translate dreams into realities such as creating fair economic activities and fair chances for all with no corruption, no special treatment to families and allies besides providing abundant job opportunities for our children.
