Kuching city can be the safest city around with CCTVs

KUCHING:  Kuching will go a notch up on the friendly and smart city ladder if closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance is installed in known crime hotspots in the city.

“The installation of CCTVs will help security enforcement agencies to identify, track down and nab criminals and suspects based on the real visuals,” Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) mayor Datuk Junaidi Reduan said during a walkabout programme at Satok Weekend Market (Medan Niaga Satok) here in Kubah Ria yesterday.

Junaidi said CCTVs would be the most effective strategy in crime prevention and solving.

“CCTVs can help make this city the safest city around,” he said.

“But of course, the fundamental issue is the availability of funds,” he lamented,

“Not only is purchasing the CCTV system itself expensive, but we also need money to train the city’s security personnel and to maintain the system,” said Junadi.

Nothing the state government’s vision to transform Kuching into a digital smart city, Junaidi reiterated his stand that CCTVs can indeed help transform the city lifestyle.

“Besides, tourists love places where their safety is assured,” he said.

“DBKU hopes to pursue the Kuching smart city initiatives as I think now is the time for us to make this happen.

“And that’s my one and only Malaysia Day wish,” he added.
