KUCHING: The management of CityOne Megamall is confident that the mall will return to normal operations within the next few days.
Mall owner Stephen Long said the Fire and Rescue Department and the forensic team from Putrajaya had completed their investigations.
“Now, a team of certified Structural Engineering Consultants is still combing through the mall’s premises to ensure that the building is deemed fit to be re-opened to the public,” he said after a meeting with tenants and staff yesterday.
Long added that it was confirmed that the main switch, air-conditioning system and electrical components were working well and tenants were allowed to enter the premises to inspect their shops yesterday.
“We are still waiting for the green light from the relevant authorities before we can reopen the mall.
“This was an incident no one wanted to happen, and no one imagined would happen, but it happened right here. I am aware of your concerns, frustration and losses, but I hope you also understand that our losses are nothing compared to those who have lost their loved ones,” he said.
He also urged fellow tenants, landlords, and shoppers to be patient because safety was of utmost importance. Therefore, all clearance and due diligence had to be carried out without compromise.
“I promise you that I will stand with you if you stand and journey with me as part of CityOne to turn this tragic episode into an experience that we will all learn from.”
Meanwhile, CityOne has designated a special area in front of the main entrance for the public to pay their last respects to those who perished in the blast. Candles are not encouraged for safety reasons.
