Clarifying Lundu boat tragedy

KUCHING: Sarawak Head of State, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar held a meeting with the Search and Rescue (SAR) operation team regarding the recent boat tragedy at Sungai Batang Kayan yesterday (Aug 21).

According to a statement released by Astana Negeri Sarawak today (Aug 22), the meeting aimed to elucidate the incident that occurred early on Tuesday morning (Aug 20). The incident involved 20 victims: 15 students from SMK Senibong, one student from SMK Lundu, three civilians, and a boat helmsman.

Meanwhile, Wan Junaidi and his wife, Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, prayed for the success of the rescue operations in locating the missing victims as soon as possible.

“The meeting delegation was led by Opar Assemblyman Billy Sujang, followed by Kuching Division Resident, Dayang Juanita Azizah Abang Morsidi; Lundu District Officer, Awang Yusuf Awang Mostapha; and Deputy Lundu District Officer, Zulkifli Morshidi,” the statement said.

The Lundu District Police Chief, Damataries Lautin; the Special Branch Chief of the Lundu District Office, Inspector Romi Benet; and the Lundu Special Branch Officer, Sergeant Major Unchu Belalang, along with the Deputy Director of the Fire and Rescue Department, Tiong Ling Sii; the Assistant Director of Operations for Sarawak, Henderi Ardimansyah; and the Lundu District Fire Chief, Joseph Diea, were also in attendance at the meeting.
