KUCHING: Classroom magazines can encourage a reading culture among students and also diversify the medium of knowledge delivery in teaching and learning (PdP).

Malaysian Language and Library Association (MLLA) Director General, Dr Hazami Jahari, said that the idea was adopted to assist Malay instructors diversify approaches and strategies in their teaching and learning process (PdP) in the classroom.

“In addition, it also aims to empower the reading culture in schools through the use of quality reading material such as magazines because it can sharpen students’ minds and help teachers improve PdP performance,” he said.

He said this during the inauguration of the Back to School Magazine Action Programme at SMK Tun Abang Haji Openg here yesterday.

In addition, said Dr Hazami, classroom magazines can also ensure that students get excellent exam results in addition to helping teachers train and guide students to gain useful additional knowledge from quality materials.

“For example, Cikgu Azizul Rahman Abdul Rahman, who is Johor’s Teacher of the Year, National Teacher of the Year 2016, Education Leadership 2016 and Outstanding Principal, uses many magazines published by MLLA, namely Dewan Siswa and Dewan Pelajar, as effective PdP material,” he added.

He also explained that this programme is in line with the wishes of the Ministry of Education which wants students to be involved in the process of acquiring knowledge and nurturing a culture of reading.

“With affordable prices, we hope that the Dewan Siswa and Dewan Pelajar magazines can be subscribed to by schools or donated by certain parties to schools as one of the efforts to cultivate knowledge,” he explained.

Magazines published by MLLA can also be accessed digitally through the MLLA portal.

Also present were Abang Haliman Abang Julai (Director of the Language and Library Council), Siti Fatimah Saufee (Deputy Director of Sarawak Education Department), Fauzilahyatun Mustafa (Director of the Publications Department of the Language and Library Council) and Jamli Bujang (Representative of SMK Tun Abang Haji Openg).
