KUCHING: The Federal Government is currently drafting a national Climate Change Bill, before it is tabled in Parliament.

Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said it is part of the government’s initiative to strengthen climate change policies and the carbon market in Malaysia, particularly in alignment with initiatives already undertaken by the Sarawak Government.

“We are conducting a series of engagements with state governments, and Sarawak has been at the forefront in planning carbon policies.

“Therefore, we are working on the ground to ensure that the proposed bill can be introduced as soon as possible, in line with the steps already taken by Sarawak and to meet international requirements under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC).”

He said this to reporters after paying a courtesy visit to the Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here on Tuesday.

Nik Nazmi also mentioned that discussions with Abang Johari on this matter were very positive, with the government committed to working closely to achieve the net-zero target by 2050.
