KUCHING: The climate change is not only happening across the globe but in Sarawak as well, said Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian
In stating this, the Deputy Premier pointed out that extreme weather phenomena such as continuous heavy rain and scorching heat here had triggered various disasters such as flash floods, and heat stroke.
“Believe it or not, climate change is in Sarawak and Kuching. We can see this during the extreme weather, with last month having seen an excessive amount of rain and this month being so dry.
“Climate change is no longer confined to foreign countries like Europe, the United States and remote islands. We are suffering also,” he said.
He said this when officiating at the launch of Make Climate Cool Again in conjunction with Earth Day 2023 at Dewan Masyarakat Kuching South City Council (MBKS), Jalan Padungan here today.
Looking at the matter, he called on the public to work together to cool the climate which was now facing global warming.
“Everyone can do their part to help raise awareness and promote environmental sustainability.
“With that, I congratulate MBKS for launching a new mobile application iBuyBack which complements with its Recycling Buy Back Campaign.
“With this app, it will be easier for users to participate in sustainable waste disposal using advanced technology,” he commended.
As such, Dr Sim expressed his hope that the new app would also be adopted by other local councils across Sarawak to encourage more people to embrace recycling so as to promote environmental sustainability.
“With environmental sustainability being in the three main pillars of the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS2030), this app is on the right track in supporting the state government’s decision to include sustainable development and climate change.
“With that, I hope that people will take action and make our earth cool again,” he said.
