KUCHING: Due to the difference in levels of comprehension in regards to digital economy, the best strategy needs to be formulated so that Sarawakians can understand what it is and improve the state’s economic standing.

“It is also important that rural farmers embrace technology – especially in terms of food production – as a way to move forward.

“The state government will explore all strategies to ensure that the gap between the urban and rural areas will be narrowed down,” said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Johari said this yesterday during the closing ceremony of the International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak (IDECS) 2018 which was held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here.

“We have to educate and invest in training the talents of the people as it is our intention that by 2030, Sarawak will be in the forefront in Malaysia in terms of economic performance,” he said.

The Chief Minister explained that there are three main points which could contribute to the improvement of the state’s economic performance.

“First of all, we have the resources and if a nation like Singapore with no resources can progress, then we can do it too.

“Secondly, the youths make up the majority of the population here so we have to create jobs for them so that they can unleash their creativity and potential.

“Thirdly, we are strategically located in the new world economy among giants such as India and China. So, there is a potential market.

“If we can achieve that, then Sarawak will be in the right economic position,” Johari added.

Also present during the closing ceremony were Deputy Chief Ministers Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and State Secretary Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Morshidi Abdul Ghani.
