KUCHING: By passing the Oil Mining (Amendment) Bill 2018 the government continues the legacy left behind by the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem, said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Johari Tun Openg.
“The people gave a big mandate to him (Adenan) and he stressed on getting back our rights which were eroded by the Federal government.
“To give the oil and gas rights back to us is to give the rights back to the people of Sarawak,” he said during the Sarawak Malay Culture Foundation Charitable Trust (AKYBMS)’s ‘SAMArindok Aidilfitri’ event at Dewan Majma Tuanku Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah, Kompleks Islam here on Thursday night.
Abang Johari added that when it came to claiming back the State’s rights, it should be done in a civil way without letting emotions take over.
“By playing a more active role in the State’s oil and gas industry, we can benefit from this and give back to the people in terms of development,” he said.
The Chief Minister also spoke on the Land Code (Amendment) Bill 2018 which was also recently passed during the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting.
“When it comes to the subject of land, it needs to be solved in a thorough manner that is inclusive of everyone involved in order to be fair.
“We want to solve the problem once and for all for the benefit of everyone and we are thankful that it was passed in the recent DUN sitting,” he said.
Also present at the event were Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and DUN Speaker, Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar.
