KUCHING: The state government is planning to develop more toll-free bridges in Sarawak. This was revealed by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Johari Tun Openg during the ground-breaking ceremony of the rebuilding of the Satok Suspension Bridge Kuching (‘Jambatan Gantung Satok’) at Medan Niaga Satok here on Wednesday.
“The government plans to developing another new bridge that will connect the Darul Hana Development Project and Kampung Bintawa,” he said. In addition to that, he said that the government is currently developing the bridges at Bako, Matang, and Rambungan; all of which will be free to the people.
“With these bridges, it will make Kuching a city that is both beautiful and easy for the people to interact with one another. Meanwhile, the Satok Suspension Bridge which in the process of being rebuilt is a symbol of the unity of the multiracial people.
“This bridge has its own history and its rebuilding comes from the people in the area as it is valuable in terms of history. “Back in 1926, it was used to provide water to the people in Kuching,” he said. He explained that the bridge will be a tourist attraction in the area as with Medan Niaga Satok and Kubah Ria, it allows visitors to easily traverse back and forth while exploring what it has to offer.
“We will install LED lights so that at night, it can be seen and enjoyed by many people, while at the same time make Petra Jaya more beautiful and modern-looking,” he said. Also present at the ground-breaking ceremony were Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing, Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, State Secretary Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Morshidi Abdul Ghani, ministers and guests.
