KUCHING: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg and his wife Datuk Amar Juma’aini Tun Tuanku Bujang wish celebrants a Happy Wesak Day today (May 26).

Wesak Day or Vesak commemorates the birth, enlightenment and death of Gautama Buddha who founded Buddhism.

The day is usually celebrated in May or early June during the first full moon of the ancient lunar month of Vesakha.

The celebration is observed by Buddhists and some Hindus in South and Southeast Asia including Tibet and Mongolia.

Similarly, Senior Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof also wishes celebrants a “Happy Wesak Day”.

“Happy Wesak Day to those celebrating! May it bring you joy and happiness always,” he said.

Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, in his Wesak Day greeting, said this year’s festive celebration was done in a new normal. He urged celebrants to stay at home and observe the standard operating procedures (SOPs).
