Sibu Express Boat Terminal started crowded with people, who want to return home for Chinese New Year break.

SIBU: The Sibu Express Boat Terminal has started crowding with passengers as city folks return home to celebrate the Chinese New Year celebration.

This time round, Chinese New Year falls on Feb 5. It is an event that is much looked forward to by children all over the world as it is an occasion for universal joy and endless merrymaking.

The Chinese New Year is a long period of public holidays in which people devote their entire energy to eating and meeting with friends and relatives. It is the largest festival for the Chinese community.

Last Friday (Feb 1), Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) launched a two-phase safety enforcement operation in conjunction with the Chinese New Year festival.

The first phase was from Feb 1 till 3 while the second will be held from Feb 9 to 10.

The focus is on express boats, speed boats and private boats to prevent overloading. River blocks will be mounted at strategic locations.

SRB also conducts stringent checks on passenger boats, including pre-departure inspections.
