KUCHING: Kenyalang Park is again buzzing with life with the Chinese New Year less than two weeks away.
A festive air permeates the high density residential area with long stretches of stalls and bright festive lights, mostly lit in red at the bazaar – a familiar sign that the Lunar New Year is approaching.
Among the more popular items being sold are bak kua, lanterns and flowers and, believe it or not, a biscuit made from pumpkin.
Bella Lee, 42, and her husband Jee Wee, 43, have been operating at the Kenyalang Park CNY Bazaar for 20 years now.
She recommends that visitors and customers indulge in a unique pineapple tart made from pumpkin and maggi powder.
‘Fachai Kua’ which is believed to bring about wealth and good looks, is currently a fast moving item at their stall.
In line with the forthcoming year of the Rabbit, better known as the Water Rabbit, Lee promotes her item with a Rabbit design packaging.
“I only sell the biscuits and food once a year, and I don’t sell it anywhere else,” she said.
She hastens to add that shortbread, almond and chocolate chip cookies are also among the visitors’ favourites.
Another fan favourite at the Kenyalang Park CNY Bazaar is the dried cuttlefish which is priced between RM20 and RM25.
Rohaya, 42, says she has been selling dried cuttlefish as well as fruit cakes.
“My specialty is fruit cakes and it has been a popular item since Christmas.
“I usually make them at home and sell them from home, however, if there’s an event like this I’ll join in as well,” she added.
Nevertheless, Rohaya pointed out that for this bazaar, dried cuttlefish is the public’s favourite.
“I have been selling since Christmas, and now for Chinese New Year, it’s been non-stop,” she said.
Rohaya adds that once she’s done selling here and returns home, ‘it’s get back to work’ for her.
The Kenyalang Park CNY Bazaar which started on Jan 6 will go on until Jan 21.
