MUKAH: All parties including at the grassroots level must cooperate in combating drug abuse, said Tellian assemblyman Royston Valentine.
“We are aware that eradicating drugs is not as easy as it seems because the menace has existed for years.
“However, we can take approaches to reduce and prevent its abuse among the society,” he said at a porridge distribution programme organised by the Malaysian Association Against Drug Abuse (PEMADAM) Mukah District in collaboration with the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) of Kampung Datuk, held at the village hall yesterday.
He mentioned that there are many platforms that can be utilised by various parties to raise awareness about drug abuse if they collaborate with each other.
“Community heads and village chiefs (KMKK) need to get involved to combat drug abuse.
“The KMKK must also collaborate to organise programmes with government agencies on this matter because we understand that preventing drug abuse at the village and longhouse levels is not an easy task.
“The KMKK can directly contact or report to the police of any unwanted incidents,” he explained.
Meanwhile, he advised the relevant agencies to encourage more youths to actively participate in activities organised by PEMADAM.
Additionally, he also wants to see programmes organised by government agencies and non-governmental organisations to be implemented smoothly and attended by all segments of society so that their objectives are achieved.
At the event, Royston distributed a total of 500 packets of porridge to the local residents.
