KUCHING: Sarawak’s tennis players have progressed to the quarter-finals at the 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma).

In the men’s singles, Cornelius Sia delivered a strong performance by defeating Mohammad Asyahmie Haffiezi Suhaili from Sabah 6-2, 6-2.

Meanwhile, in the women’s doubles, Sarawak’s Eliora Hii and Nathanielle Lee secured a comfortable win against Negeri Sembilan, with a score of 6-1, 6-0.

The mixed doubles team of Matthew Goh and Soo Hui Yii also triumphed, overcoming Johor’s Jared Hahn and Wan Noor Hidayah with a convincing 6-0, 6-2 victory.

However, in the women’s singles, Marsha Amber Donny fell to Nur Adriana Safiya Othman from Perlis, losing 1-6, 1-6.

The quarter-finals will be played on Tuesday (Aug 19).

Sarawak coach Arvin Tabil Jurao expressed optimism about the team’s chances for more gold medals, particularly in the women’s doubles, if they keep up their strong performance.

“We also have a strong chance in the mixed doubles. Though the competition is tough, we might have luck on our side,” he said to reporters.

Sarawak remains determined to secure gold in the individual event, despite missing out on medals in the mixed team event.

The individual event began on Aug 19 and will conclude on Aug 22.
