SARIKEI: The Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government has remained committed to develop the agriculture sector in Sarawak.
Repok assemblyman Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii said the rapid development in Sarikei today had proven the determination of the state government.
“The smart measures and steps taken by the state government to make the agriculture sector as one of the main economic resources in the future have benefitted Sarikei.
“It has helped to improve the living standards and socio-economy of the people. Thank you, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg,” he said at the Agriculture Community Outreach Programme (AgriCOP) held at Sarikei Civic Hall on Wednesday.
Emphasising that GPS has always fulfilled their promises to the rakyat, he said the move to drive the state’s agriculture sector in the food security supply chain has enable the state government to bring more development to rural areas.
“The efforts have also taken into account the fertility of the land and its vast areas, whereby several areas have been identified as the ‘food basket’ of Sarawak, such as Sarikei.
“This is because the areas are every suitable for various types of profitable crops.
“For example, Musang King durian is seen suitable for large-scale cultivation, especially in Sarikei. In addition, local vegetables and fruits such as rambutan, pineapple, dabai, jackfruit, mangosteen and langsat are also suitable to be cultivated on a large scale,” he said.
