KUCHING: The Sarawak government is working to diversify its agricultural sector by promoting coffee farming as a strategic crop to enhance local farmers’ livelihoods.
Minister for Food Industry, Commodities, and Regional Development Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom said coffee cultivation holds great potential for empowering farmers, strengthening food security, and increasing export revenue.
“Coffee farming can unlock our land’s agricultural potential, empower local farmers, and contribute to Sarawak’s food security and export capabilities.
“With demand for coffee outpacing local supply, this crop offers economic advantages and aligns with our goals of environmental sustainability and biodiversity support,” he said.
He stated this in a speech read by Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Dr Jerip Susil during the opening of the Coffee and Climate Change Workshop here yesterday (Nov 6).
Dr Rundi added that the ministry will provide extension services to equip farmers with the knowledge and tools for climate-resilient farming to support the coffee industry’s growth.
“Workshops, training programmes, and demonstration farms are essential for helping farmers adopt new technologies and techniques.
“This support is particularly crucial for smallholder farmers who may lack the resources or technical know-how to transition independently,” he added.
He also highlighted the importance of government policies in promoting sustainable coffee production in Sarawak to ensure lasting benefits for both the environment and the agricultural sector.
