KUCHING: Bintangor is famous for its big prawn noodles, huge green oranges, mee goreng basah, rojak, and many others. But have you heard of their hipster coffee cafes?

Quite a number of cargo or shipping containers have been converted into some really cool cafes in the town.

Located between residential houses at Taman Alomara, Bintangor, is where you find a container cafe named Coffee In A Box.

It serves a variety of coffee, smoothies, and many more.

Uniquely, Coffee In A Box imports raw coffee beans from foreign countries and they roast the beans themselves to better control the degree of maturity.

The cafe started operating after Chinese New Year last year. It started small with the family entertaining relatives and friends with coffee drinks before they decided to expand it into real business.

Twenty-eight-year-old Stanly from Bintangor, told New Sarawak Tribune that the cafe is a family business with the idea behind the shop’s name being that it is about coffee made and served from a container.

“At first, we found that someone was selling food and beverages (F&B) containers. It happened that there was no related business in our area, so we bought it and renovated it.

“In the beginning, we were doing it not for profit purposes . The original purpose was to entertain business partners, relatives and friends.

“But more and more people came to know of the existence of Coffee In A Box, so we started to build tables and chairs and applied for a formal business licence to purchase social insurance,” he said.

The accounting graduate from Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak is now helping the family to run the business.

On its future plan, Stanly said the family is now working on building a container-style indoor air-conditioned dining area.

“We want our customers to have a better dining environment without any fear of heat or wind and rain as before.

“It is expected to be put into use in August. And we are looking forward to that,” he said.
