KUCHING: The collaboration of the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) with the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) will further strengthen the digitalisation of the economy in the state to encourage digital investment.
According to a news report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS), Minister of Communications and Digital, Ahmad Fahmi Mohamed Fadzil said, SDEC and MDEC are formulating strategies to channel and ensure digital investment projects from selected sectors will be implemented in Sarawak.
“In an effort to increase closer cooperation with the state government and related agencies, MDEC is planning to establish state offices in some selected locations such as in Kuching.
“Meanwhile, MDEC is also devising a strategy to channel and ensure digital investment projects from selected sectors such as global business services, digital content, data centres and cloud services are implemented in Sarawak,” he said.
He said this when replying to an oral question from a member of the Senate, Robert Lau Hui Yew in the Senate recently.
He added that in order to attract data centre investment to Sarawak, the state government needs to play a role by offering facilities and incentives to investors.
“Currently, data centre investors will start with locations that have the highest demand such as the Klang Valley because it is the centre of the largest economic activity in Malaysia, and Johor because of the overflow of demand from Singapore.
“To increase the attractiveness of new data centre locations like Sarawak, there is a need to generate local demand and improve domestic and international connectivity infrastructure,” he said.
