SIBU: Local community is urged to collaborate with the police in combatting the drug crimes.

Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Datuk Dr. Annuar Rapaee pointed out the connection between drug abuse and major crimes in Sibu.

“Drug abuse is a primary factor behind the majority of crimes here. The success of police efforts to combat this issue depends greatly on the information provided by residents. Without their assistance, our ability to respond quickly and effectively is hindered.

“Our police force’s efforts deserve our recognition and support. It’s imperative for the community to engage cooperatively and supply the police with precise information to facilitate investigations,” he said at the Community Policing programme, officiated by Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata held at the Malay Union Club Hall today (Feb 26).

Meanwhile, Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Ibrahim Darus, during a question-and-answer session, said that all drugs seized in Sarawak were imported, with no local production detected.

He detailed how the authorities have been effective in preventing the establishment of drug labs and the necessity for constant adaptation to the evolving tactics of drug syndicates.

“Even though our scanners at major entry points are operational 24/7, criminals frequently alter their smuggling techniques to evade capture. For example, if caught transporting drugs in luggage today, they might try a different method the next time. This demands our persistent effort in studying and understanding their changing strategies.

“In January alone, the value of the drugs confiscated exceeded RM7 million,” said Ibrahim.

He also mentioned ongoing efforts to curb the misuse of ketum leaves, which poses a risk of addiction similar to that of other drugs.

Also present were Sibu policecChief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili and Sibu Resident Datuk Wong Hee Sieng, among others.
