KUCHING: The MA63 Implementation Action Council (MTPMA63) Technical Committee will deliberate on allocating one-third of parliamentary seats for Sabah and Sarawak in the first quarter of next year.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the committee will gather reports from three legal advisors representing the federal, Sabah and Sarawak governments.

The report will review legal interpretations of the allocation and explore ways to finalise the process.

“The Election Commission (SPR) has conducted a study, but for implementation, input from the federal, Sabah, and Sarawak attorney generals is necessary.

“Hopefully, it can proceed, though there’s currently no set timeline. However, we’re aiming to call the technical committee in the first quarter of next year.

“It will then be presented to the top leadership,” he said when speaking to reporters after officiating the Lan Berambeh Petra Jaya programme, part of the Takaful Masuk Kampung initiative, at Dewan Kampung Samariang Batu here on Sunday.

Fadillah, who is MA63 Implementation Action Council Technical Committee chairman, however said that it is unlikely to be completed before the next general election given the many processes involved.

“There’s the procedure with the SPR, gazetting, bringing it to Parliament for constitutional amendments, and securing constitutional approval. It is unlikely to be in time for this election cycle,” he added.

During the recent Dewan Rakyat sitting, Fadillah said the MADANI government was committed to resolving the remaining claims under the MA63, including allocating one-third of parliamentary seats for Sabah and Sarawak.
