KUCHING: The local community is being called upon to assist those affected by a devastating fire at a car workshop in Mile 4 1/2, Jalan Datuk Bandar Mustapha, which resulted in the tragic deaths of two elderly individuals this morning (Mar 2).
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the council is committed to aiding the families.
“We are doing our utmost to support the families affected by this tragedy.
“The case is still under investigation, and we await its outcome,” he told reporters during the Anti-Rabies Programme at Song Swee Guan Recreational Park, Tabuan Jaya today.
Meanwhile, Datuk Khirudin Drahman, director of the State Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), said that the victims might have tried to flee but were possibly obstructed by the workshop’s gated environment.
Khirudin noted that the fire, causing extensive damage to the workshop and 12 vehicles, was extinguished by 5.23 am.
Bomba teams from Batu Lintang and Tabuan Jaya were dispatched following a 4.01 am emergency call.
The bodies of the victims, a 70-year-old man discovered in the living room and a 60-year-old woman found in a charred state in a bedroom, have been transferred to the police for further procedures.
