KOTA SAMARAHAN: As the North-East Monsoon takes its course from Nov 11 until March next year, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas has mobilised Community Emergency Response Teams in rural areas.
According to him, these teams, consisting of local community leaders, play a crucial role in responding swiftly to flooding incidents, especially when government agencies may face delays.
Uggah noted the importance of proactive measures in flood-prone areas, with the Community Emergency Response Teams playing a pivotal role.
“These local leaders are trained to manage emergencies, signal the local resident office in case of flooding, and address health issues promptly.
“In the face of potential flooding, it is vital to have these teams ready, considering agencies might not arrive immediately.
“They need to know what actions to take and how to handle situations, ensuring timely assistance to those in need.”
He made these remarks during his visit for upgrading works at a roundabout on Samarahan Expressway today (Nov 16).
Uggah, who chairs the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee, disclosed on Tuesday (Nov 14) that 5,501 personnel are on standby, equipped with 748 land, sea, river, and air assets, along with 207 support assets.
“We have distributed 70 fibre boats for evacuations, and 627 temporary relief centres stand ready to accommodate up to 162,091 disaster victims.
“Additionally, the state Civil Defence Force has stockpiled 4,000 food kits for evacuees.”
He pointed out that 154 flood-risk areas have been identified, emphasising the meticulous planning to address potential challenges during this monsoon season.
