KUCHING: Persatuan Segu Bunuk Penrissen (PSBP) plans to set up a community fire brigade or BOMBA Komuniti for villages under its umbrella.

PSBP secretary Aden Nagrace said the association has been supplying and distributing fire extinguishers to six villages namely Kampung Segu Bunuk, Kampung Sumur, Kampung Sorot, Kampung Sibatuh, Kampung Punau, and Kampung Bratan for the past three years.

He said the availability and access of these fire extinguishers have enabled the villages to tackle small fire incidents in the past.

“These fire extinguishers are placed at strategic points around the respective villages. We are pleased that the villagers know how to take care of and utilise the fire extinguishers when needed.

“As such, we are looking to work together with the State Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA Sarawak) to ensure the villagers are better equipped with fire safety knowledge and skills through the establishment of a BOMBA Komuniti,” he said.

He said this during a recent courtesy call on BOMBA Sarawak director Datuk Khirudin Drahman at BOMBA headquarters.

During the courtesy visit, Aden was accompanied by PSBP chairman Gabriel Tomi and treasurer Robert Oren.

Meanwhile, Khirudin welcomed the strategic collaboration and provided insights into how to move forward with the establishment of a BOMBA Komuniti for the Bisegu community.

He said the Bisegu community can appoint 10 members from each respective villages to be a part of the BOMBA Komuniti there.

“The BOMBA Komuniti can have up to 60 members who are between the ages of 18 and 65. The department will establish fire points for the respective villages and provide fire extinguishers through our allocation,” he said.

Khirudin also said the department would conduct basic two-day training for the members, including the Celik SURI (Sedia Urus Risiko Isirumah) programme for women.

“Every member of a community has a role to play when it comes to fire safety. Apart from focusing on safety of their home, these women will also be taught the importance of indoor safety, especially while cooking in the kitchen as even the slightness negligence can lead to a disaster.
