MUKAH: Children have the right to be protected at all times, and the surrounding community must take an active role in safeguarding them, says Tellian assemblyman Royston Valentine.
He stressed the importance of protecting children, as they are the future leaders.
“We need to ensure their safety by educating them about personal security and making sure they are always protected. The community must also take responsibility to ensure children’s rights are upheld,” he said.
He made these remarks while officiating the Advocacy Programme: Protection of Children’s Love at SMK Mukah yesterday.
Royston commended the Mukah Social Welfare Department (JKM) for organizing the programme, which he described as highly beneficial, especially for the children.
He also advised the students involved in the programme to remain focused on their education.
Meanwhile, Mukah Division social welfare officer Dariel Thiong Yiew Seng reported that, as of August 2024, Mukah had recorded 30 cases involving children, which included cases of children in need of care, immediate protection, and those dealing with uncontrollable behaviour, criminal activities, and out-of-wedlock pregnancies.
“To address these issues, JKM has established the Child Welfare Team (PKKK) and the Child Protection Team (PPKK), which are always ready to coordinate local services for those in need.
“We greatly appreciate the community’s role in identifying and reporting cases of abuse or neglect, as timely intervention is crucial,” he added.
Thiong also expressed gratitude to JKM Mukah, the staff of SMK Mukah, and the other agencies involved in making the programme a success.
During the event, Royston also launched a mural, symbolising the commitment of all parties to protecting the children at the school.
Among those present were Mukah District officer Peleadzman Ahip, SMK Mukah principal Abang Djohan Abang Isa, and Mukah Division Resident representative Mohamad Hafizul Rahman.
