KUCHING: A complaint was lodged last Friday with the Registrar of Societies (ROS) to get the agency to investigate Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) which admittedly received 1MDB money from Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Recap: The 1Malaysia Development Berhad scandal or 1MDB scandal is an ongoing political scandal occurring in Malaysia. In 2015, Malaysia’s then-Prime Minister Najib Razak was accused of channelling over RM2.67 billion (nearly $ 700 million) from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), a government-run strategic development company, to his personal bank accounts. – Wikipedia, 1Malaysia Development Berhad scandal

Sim Kiat Leng, who is special assistant to Chong Chieng Jen (Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs), made known the complaint during a press conference yesterday at Democratic Action Party (DAP) headquarters here.

He stated that SUPP president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian had admitted that his party received money in 2013 from Najib’s account.

“In respect of his admission of having received money, I have lodged a complaint with ROS Putrajaya last Friday for them to further investigate the party,” he said.

“According to Section 13 of the Societies Act 1966, the Registrar may, in the following cases, cancel the registration of any society registered under Section 7… and one of the grounds for the Registrar to cancel the registration is that the society is likely to be used for unlawful purposes or for purposes prejudicial to or incompatible with peace, welfare, good order or morality in Malaysia,” he explained.

He added that SUPP has always claimed to fight for Sarawakians and protect Sarawak’s autonomy, but it’s for political show.

Sim then asserted that SUPP “betrayed” Sarawak by accepting the RM180,000 from 1MDB.

“Thus, we hope that ROS would look into this matter and if necessary, cancel or suspend SUPP for its involvement in the 1MDB debacle,” he said.
