KUCHING: The Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) proposed complex is a manifestation of Sarawak’s uniqueness in terms of tolerance among the multi-religious and multi-racial people.

Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Youth chief Datuk Snowdan Lawan said the RM70 million complex when completed, will be a new landmark that showcases not only religious tolerance among the people but most importantly the spirit of inclusiveness.

“Sarawak is well known for its uniqueness due to its diverse cultures blended by multi religious tolerance, a place like no other.

“So, opposing the noble contribution of the state government to the society is equivalent to denying this uniqueness to prevail. It is self-centred and non-inclusive,” he said in a statement on Sunday.

Snowdan was commenting on remarks by PSB Youth that the Unifor Complex was a ‘waste of money’ unless it served other purposes than solely dealing with non-Islamic affairs and charitable trust.

“I believe all assistance to other religious units as rendered by Unifor all this while will continue. The construction of this new building is above that. It is a recognition.

“I would like to think of its unifying impact on our society as a whole. We should be proud and support it wholeheartedly,” he pointed out.

He added there was no other states in Malaysia doing what Sarawak did (building Unifor Complex) under the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“My message to PSB Youth is — do not oppose just for the sake of opposing to gain cheap publicity,” he said.
