KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) will host a comprehensive journalism course aimed at rural reporters from June 25 to June 27.
The course at MPI Cyberjaya will cover a wide range of topics essential for modern journalism, including news writing, ethical journalism, and social media skills.
On June 25, the programme will kick off at 8.30 am with participant registration, followed by an introductory session at 9 am on “Career as a Journalist” led by former editor-in-chief of Bernama and president of MPI Datuk Yong Soo Heong.
At 11 am, Yong will discuss the “Qualities of an Outstanding Journalist,” and the session will be followed by lunch and afternoon prayers. The day will end with a workshop from 2.30 pm to 4 pm on “Creating Award-Winning Work,” also conducted by Yong. The first day of the course will end at 5 pm.
On June 26, the second day begins at 9 am with a session on “News Writing” by former CEO of Bernama Datuk Mokhtar Hussain. Following a morning break, former Group editor-in-chief of NST and a National Journalist Laureate Datuk A Kadir Jasin will lead a session on “Moral Stance in Journalism” at 11 am.
After lunch and prayers, Mokhtar will return for a session on “Feature Writing” at 2 pm. The day will end with practical training in news and feature writing from 3.45 pm to 5 pm.
On June 27, the final day will focus on modern journalism skills. Assistant editor at UtusanTV Ainol Amriz Ismail, will start the day at 9 am with sessions on “Basics of Social Media Writing and Storyboarding” and “Basics of Smartphone Video and Recording.”
After a break, Ainol will lead a practical session on video capture and uploading at 11 am. The afternoon will feature a presentation of participants’ work and an introduction to “AI Intelligent 101” by him as well.
The ends with a closing ceremony and certificate presentation at 4.45 pm, officiated by CEO of MPI Datuk Mustapa Omar.
