The 4th international conference on media and society (iC-MAS2022) is a two-day conference held as part of the Strategic Communication programme by the Faculty of Languages and Communication from December 20 to 21, 2022 at DeTar Putra UNIMAS.
This year’s iC-MAS2022 conference was launched by Professor Dr Wan Hashim Wan Ibrahim, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation).
The purpose of this conference is to provide an excellent platform for the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and competence on cultural heritage.
The goals of the conference are to discuss the changing landscape of cultural heritage at the local and international levels, to provide a platform for debate on various current issues related to cultural heritage, to promote the sharing of scientific research findings among media and communication scholars at the local and international levels, and to enhance networking among media and communication scholars, practitioners, and industry players.
The conference featured three speakers: Associate Professor Dr Reenavy Bustami, Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Multicultural and Multireligious Understanding; Professor Dr Qistina Donna Lee Abdullah, Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Applied and Creative Art, UNIMAS, and industry practitioner; and Sarawak Association President Jason Brooke, who is also Chairman of the Brooke Trust Board of Trustees.
Dr Dayang Aizza Abang Ahmad, the Conference’s Chairman, said that it was the first hybrid conference organised by the Faculty of Languages and Communication, UNIMAS since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Furthermore, Jason was one of those who delivered the Cultural Heritage Communication lecture, saying that the Brooke Trust and the Brooke Museum have built and operate two permanent museums in Sarawak, the Brooke Gallery in Fort Margherita and the Ranee Museum in the Old Court House.
“In 2023 we will embark upon a major social programme supported by Yayasan Hasanah, to teach underprivileged youth about the art of Keringkam weaving” he said.
By the end of his presentation, he emphasised that it is important for all of us to understand what our cultural heritage is.
Dean Professor Dr Ambigapathy Pandian, Dean of the Faculty of Languages and Communication; and Senior Director of the Innovation and Enterprise Research Center Prof Dr Lo May Chiun are among those attending this conference.
