Salang is PRS president
KUCHING: All’s well that ends well in Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS). In the interest of party unity and solidarity, the leaders have agreed to a consensus line-up which eliminates the need to go through an election in the forthcoming triennial delegates conference (TDC).
PRS secretary-general Datuk Janang Bungsu who announced the decision at a press conference here today, said the supreme council consensus was agreed upon as the leadership was conscious of the damaging effects on Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) should the party polls result in a split.
“The consensus on the leadership line-up was reached after a great deal of personal sacrifice on the part of both Datuk John Sikie and acting president Datuk Joseph Salang,” he said.
He said Sikie displayed admirable statesmanship by graciously offering to accept a lesser position in the consensus line-up despite having received many nominations for the presidency.
“Meanwhile, Salang on his part agreed to be take up the presidency to preserve balance (of power) in the party.
“At stake is the public image of PRS as well as the image of Dayak political leadership, both of which can be adversely affected or damaged if we fail in managing any crisis in the party,” he said.
The party’s presidency fell vacant following the death of president Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing on Oct 31, 2021.
PRS will hold its TDC in Sibu on April 23 and 24.
