SONG: After 14 years of waiting, residents of Nanga Kabah/SK Beguang Sungai Song, Song, Kapit can finally breathe a sigh of relief as the construction of the long-awaited road they have been appealing for has now begun.
Federal Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi revealed that the residents have been requesting the road’s construction since 2010, with approval granted in 2018.
“Due to changes in government after the 2018 election, the project was put on hold. Fortunately, in 2020, we regained office; however, increased project costs caused delays.
“We found that the project cost had escalated, leading us to adopt a phased construction approach,” he explained.
Nanta made these remarks during the earth-breaking ceremony for phase 1 of the road project for Nanga Kabah/SK Beguang Sungai Song, Song, Kapit at Log Pond Beguang on May 3.
The project, implemented under the federal Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW), carries a budget of RM145.88mil and is scheduled for completion by March 31, 2027.
The Kapit MP outlined that the 16.75km road will initially be an R1 grade road (gravel), with plans for upgrading to an R3 grade road and extension to Kapit.
“While the road hasn’t reached Kapit yet, the crucial aspect is the commencement of construction. This marks a significant step forward.”
He also announced plans for a bridge between Song and Kapit to complete the three-phase road, facilitating travel between Nanga Kabah/SK Beguang Song and the area.
“Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has ensured the project’s continuity, with phases two and three set to follow suit. Funds have been allocated for preliminary work on a major bridge spanning the Batang Rajang River.”
Nanta stressed that the road will act as a catalyst for economic and infrastructural development in the region.
Sarawak Drainage and Irrigation Department director Datuk Ahmad Denney Ahmad Fauzi expressed hope for collaboration between residents and the contractor to ensure timely project completion.
“I urge residents to work alongside the contractor to meet project deadlines. It’s essential that the contractor takes this responsibility seriously.”
Also in attendance were Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Native Law and Customs) Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat and Katibas assemblyman Lidam Assan.
