Construction for new St Paul’s Chapel in Tarat Melawi underway

TARAT: Construction of the new St Paul’s Chapel in Tarat Melawi here has begun, with a project cost of RM1.6 million.

Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, who is also the Tarat assemblyman officiated at the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the new chapel recently.

In his speech, Roland said that the new chapel is anticipated to foster unity and religious harmony within the local community.

“The church will be built on a one-acre plot, with a main building measuring 160 feet long and 60 feet wide.

“It is expected to accommodate up to 800 congregants, thus meeting the needs of the local residents,” he said.

Sagah also announced that the Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR) has contributed RM400,000 towards the project, reflecting the Sarawak government’s ongoing support for the development of worship places for all religions in the state.

He then extended his gratitude to all parties involved, particularly the St. Paul’s Chapel Construction Committee, for their efforts in ensuring the project proceeded smoothly.

“It is also hoped that the construction would be completed on schedule and bring long-term benefits to the local community,” he said.

Also present at the ceremony were the Bishop of Kuching (Sarawak & Brunei Darussalam) The Right Reverend Datuk Danald Jute, Archdeacon of Upper South Sarawak Archdeaconry and Vicar of St John Parish, Taee, Venerable Philip Tauk, and UNIFOR assistant director Roslind Kassim.
