SIBU: The construction of the 30m-tall Heroes Monument at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase 2 here is progressing as planned and is expected to be completed by Jan 20 this year.
Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) deputy chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley confirmed that the monument is the brainchild of Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapa’ee. Once finished, it is poised to become another landmark for Sibu.
The monument aims to commemorate the freedom fighters from Sibu who valiantly fought for Sarawak’s independence from British rule. Notable figures to be honoured include Rosli Dhobi, Morshidi Sidek, Awang Ramli Amit Mohd Deli, and Bujang Suntong.
“Costing about RM777,736, the project is funded under the Rural Transformation Program (RTP) for the Nangka constituency. The site was handed over on June 23 last year, and construction commenced shortly after,” he said.
During the recent installation of a 400kg aluminum dome atop the monument, Abdullah mentioned that an additional RM1mil in RTP funding will be utilised for extra works.
These include the installation of tiles and lighting to enhance the area, with completion expected before the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration. “This aesthetic touch is meant to beautify the surroundings adjacent to the monument.”
The monument is designed by the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS), with SMC acting as the project implementing agency.
