KUCHING: Construction of the Rembus Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) Depot is underway, with the current focus on piling works for its mechanical workshop, according to a Facebook post by Sarawak Metro yesterday (Apr 20).

Located in Rembus, Kota Samarahan, the depot will serve as the main hub for the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS).

The 54-acre facility will feature a range of infrastructure including a mechanical workshop, stabling yard, hydrogen refuelling facilities, a test track, an infrastructure workshop, an administration building and an operations control centre.

Sarawak Metro added that the Rembus ART Depot is scheduled for completion by the fourth quarter of 2025.

This timeline aligns with the launch of Stage One of the ART passenger service on the Blue Line.

A subsidiary of the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), Sarawak Metro has been charged with developing, operating and maintaining the KUTS under the supervision of the Ministry of Transport Sarawak.

The project will be developed in phases, with Phase 1 comprising the Blue Line, which runs 27.6 km from Rembus to Hikmah Exchange in the city centre, and the Green Line, extending 30 km from Pending to Damai.
