KUCHING:  The Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching, Cheng Guangzhong made a courtesy call on  the Mayor of Kuching City South Council (MBKS), Dato James Chan Khay Syn in his office at MBKS Building, Padungan, here, yesterday.

Mayor Chan said he felt happy, proud and honoured to have the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching coming to visit him.

He added that over the last 10 years, MBKS had signed Friendship Agreements with five cities in China. The cities are Chongzhou, Sizhuan Province; Zhanjiang, Guangzhou Province;  Zhengjiang, Jiangsu Province;  Quanzhou, Fujian  Province;  and Kunming, Yunnan Province.

He also informed Cheng that Kuching city has a lot of Chinese community and from Sarawak’s perspective, the relationship with China had always been very good.

“We are lucky to have a very experienced Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching and I hope the people, especially the business community here will benefit from his presence,” Chan said, adding that the previous Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching was very supportive and also very helpful.

Chan said Kuching is a City of Unity with people of different cultural backgrounds, religions, traditions and customs.

“Kuching also has a lot of interesting places which tourists from China would like to visit,” he said.

Cheng, through an interpreter said Kuching is a beautiful place and there is no other better place to visit than Kuching which has clean air, low cost of living and even better than some cities in China.

He said there are 240 million senior citizens in China and he hoped to bring them here to Kuching and to Sarawak.

He agreed with Chan that there should be more direct flights from cities in China to Kuching to enable more people from China to visit Kuching and Sarawak.

Also present were Jiang Ying, a Consul from the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching and MBKS Secretary, Vincent Ang.
