KUCHING: The State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) has told Sarawakians to continue to be vigilant against Covid-19 in view of the hike in the number of positive cases reported in Sabah of late.
Its chairman, who is also Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah, said within the last two weeks, Covid-19 infection in Sabah had reached a total of 1,769 cases.
“This showed the war against Covid-19 was still far from over. We just have to stay vigilant.”
He noted that the pandemic scenario worldwide was also not improving.
“As at last Monday some 33.5 million people were reported to have been infected with one million deaths reported.
“Surrounding us, Philippines now recorded 300,000 infected cases, Indonesia (278,000), Singapore (57,000), Malaysia (11,034), and Sarawak (706),” he added.
Uggah said Sarawak had been successful in efforts to prevent widespread infection of the pandemic due to the strong support from everyone.
He said SDMC had to come up with stringent rules, regulations, and standard operating procedures (SOP) simply to curb the spread of the virus.
“But we have not won the war. We won some of the battles, but I am sure if we continue to support each other, we will be able to win the war,” he said.
