MIRI: A total of 27 cartons of contraband beer worth RM64,125.35 were seized in an operation dubbed ‘Ops Kontraban’ at Jalan Melayu, behind My Beer Cafe Centre Point here on Friday.
Police also detained a man and seized a van during the operation.
According to Miri police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, the Sarawak Marine Police Region 5 intelligence unit (URM) found the contraband inside the van during the operation at about 2.30 pm.
The police also detained the van’s driver to facilitate the investigation.
The team, he said, subsequently carried out a check inside the van and found 156 beers of Sagota; Camel Red; TsingTao Gold; Carlsberg Smooth Draught; Carlsberg Pilsner; and Guinness Foreign inside boxes believed to be untaxed.
The police also detained a local man for questioning after he failed to show proof that the items had been paid for.
The case is investigated under the Customs Act 1967.
