KUCHING: Various brands of cigarettes and alcoholic drinks with no Customs clearance were confiscated by the enforcement division of the Miri Customs Department.
The seizure of 77,540 sticks of cigarettes and 1,626.05 litres of alcoholic beverages valued at RM17,435.35 with unpaid duties of RM98,364.03 was made during an inspection at a premises at Permyjaya, Miri at 3.15pm last Tuesday.
“A suspect has been detained to assist in the investigation under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 for importing prohibited goods without valid permit,” said state Customs director Datuk Sharifah Halimah Tuanku Taha in a statement yesterday.
She added that the offender, upon conviction is liable to be fined RM100,000 or six-month imprisonment.
The Customs Department said it welcomes information from anyone on any party including traders who store or sell illegal cigarettes, liquor, firecrackers and drugs.
