MIRI: The General Operations Force (GOF) seized contraband cigarettes and alcoholic beverages worth more than RM320,000 in two separate raids on Monday.
According to a spokesperson of GOF, the raids were carried out by a team from the GOF 12th Battalion from 11am to 1.30pm.
The first raid was at a shop at Jalan Taman Ceria, Bandar Baru Permyjaya here. It was believed to be used as a place to sell and store the uncustomed cigarettes and alcohol beverages.
“The team inspected the shop and found 237,960 cigarette sticks, 8,736 beer cans and 336 beer bottles — all of which are valued at RM236,681.20.
“The second raid was at a house at Jalan Lutong, Kuala Baram, where inspections led to the discovery of 25,976 cigarette sticks, 10,296 beer cans, 480 beer bottles and 24 bottles of liquor — all valued at RM90,947.90,” the spokesperson said, adding that the items were covered with canvas and placed in the parking area.
The total seizure from both raids is estimated to be around RM327,628.80.
The team also arrested two local men in both raids, a shop worker and a house keeper, to facilitate investigations.
The suspects and seizures were handed over to Miri police headquarters (IPD) for further action under Section 135 (1) (d) of the Customs Act 1967.
