KUALA LUMPUR: Project developers and contractors have been warned to comply with instructions and standard operating procedures (SOPs) set by the National Security Council (MKN).

This was following the surge of Covid-19 cases involving construction sites in the country, particularly in the Klang Valley which have exceeded 4,000 cases to date.

The Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), in a statement on Monday said the board will intensify its inspection activities at construction sites to ensure that the workers abide by the SOPs.

“CIDB will intensify construction site inspection activities. If a site has been found to be non-compliant with the SOPs, action may be taken against the contractor under Section 34B (1) (c) and Section 34C (1) of the Construction Industry Development Board of Malaysia Act 1994 (Act 520),” it said.

Under the said clause, CIDB also warned those who defy the SOPs, which are obliged to ensure the safety of workers and deter Covid-19 transmission at construction sites, will be hit with a closure order.

“Should they fail to abide by the SOPs, the CIDB may take disciplinary actions that could result in them being penalised by issuing a stop-work order for the project site and their registration may get suspended or revoked,” it added.

From April 20 to Dec 17, CIDB said the board had conducted 13,977 inspections on 7,996 construction sites nationwide.

Of the total, 7,840 (98 percent) have started operating.

It also added that 7,522 (96 percent) of those sites are complying with the SOPs, while 318 (four percent) were found to be non-compliant.
