KUCHING: The Sarawak government will focus on promoting green energy in the effort to further preserve and protect the world’s ozone layer.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the world’s surface is getting hotter and humans must find ways to cool down the atmosphere.

He said one way to improve the situation is by exploring the use of hydrogen as an alternative fuel source for energy.

“Water can have a cooling effect and in water there’s hydrogen and oxygen…and hydrogen is a new form of energy.

“Sarawak has enormous sources of water, we have huge dams like the Bakun Dam, rivers and rainfall which could promote the use of hydrogen (as alternative energy),” he said.

Abang Johari was speaking at the 7th Convocation of Centre For Technology Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS) here, today.

A total of 1,241 graduates receive their competency-based certificates during the convocation ceremony.

The Premier noted that CENTEXS was looking to produce renewable energy in hydrogen for Sarawak.

“Today, I am very happy CENTEXS also want to produce hydrogen.

“And hydrogen is a form of energy that will transform the whole international economy,” he said adding that the centre was heading in that direction.

During the convocation, an exchange of Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) documents between CENTEXS with Huawei and Solarvest, CURTIN University, PERKESO, ASIA e University (AeU), and Kuching Chinese General Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCGCCI) was also held.

Areas of collaboration between the parties include, among others, knowledge sharing, internship programmes, community engagement or outreach, industrial engagement, employment, and other areas of cooperation for the common good.

Earlier, Abang Johari also officiated at the launch of Green Energy Testbed, which is a collaboration between CENTEXS, Huawei, and Solarvest, that will provide green energy-related learning programmes involving Smart Solar PV, Green Mobility & Storage, and Green Hydrogen.

The collaboration will lead to the development of a green energy learning programme, the first of its kind in Sarawak which aims to nurture talent for the green energy ecosystem and fulfil the needs of the green energy development of Sarawak.

The learning and talent partnership will comprehensively involve a solar rooftop partnership in Sarawak, R&D collaboration on clean smart energy, and joint IP technology development to meet the regional and global market needs from energy generation, storage, and consumption.

The learning programme is also envisioned to equip local talents with relevant hands-on training to enable seamless integration into the green energy industry workforce.

Besides that, the Premier also launched Precision & Discipline Agriculture Testbed – a collaboration between Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation Berhad (SDEC), CENTEXS, and Netafim.

Precision & Discipline Agriculture Facility (PDAF) is an end-to-end agriculture platform and solution supported by Netafim Solution, a global technology provider in the agricultural industry.

The SDEC Precision & Discipline Agriculture Facility (PDAF) is the first of its kind of fully integrated high-tech agriculture facility for greenhouse & open-field in Malaysia, designed for low land with integrated climate control and fertigation system.

The facility showcases cutting-edge digital technology in agriculture and digitally optimised modern farming operations, with CENTEXS managing the training and courses on Precision & Discipline Agriculture moving forward.
