SIBU: There have been reports of residents in two areas in Sibu Jaya here under enhanced movement control order (EMCO) trying to escape through a nearby forest.

Sibu Division Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) coordinator Dr Annuar Rapaee said the increasing number of Covid-19 cases detected in flats in Sibu Jaya was worrying, and cooperation from residents was vital to curb the infection.

“If they comply with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and remain in their homes, we may be able to stop the spread.

“Even if the EMCO is strictly enforced, if the residents do not comply with the SOPs and disobey the instructions, the situation will not change,” said the Assistant Minister of Local Government and Housing.

“Imposing strict movement control on 20 blocks of flats and residential areas at Townvilla Sibu Jaya will not necessarily help reduce the number of Covid-19 cases,” said Dr Annuar, who is also Assistant Minister of Education, Science and Technological Research.

He explained that what Sibu DDMC had done was to ensure that no residents go out from the area.

Earlier, Dr Annuar said out of the 105 new Covid-19 cases reported in Sibu, 39 of them were from Sibu Jaya.

According to the Nangka assemblyman, out of the 39 cases, 36 were from the flats while the Townvilla housing recorded two cases with another from a multi-storey housing in the area.

“In total, Sibu Jaya has 426 cases of Covid-19 so far,” he said.
