BINTULU: Police successfully busted a motorcycle theft gang with the arrest of two men in an operation dubbed ‘Ops Lejang’ on Monday (March 25).
The suspects, aged 19 and 24, were picked up by the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) after receiving reports that several motorcycles had gone missing since March 21.
Bintulu OCPD Supt Nixon Joshua Ali said that following the arrests, the police were led to the recovery of four motorcycles hidden at several remote places around the district.
One of the recovered motorcycles was dismantled to obtain its important components.
“The four motorcycles are estimated to be worth RM15,000 and with the arrest of these two men, we managed to solve this case within 48 hours.
“Investigations found that the suspects had been active since the beginning of March. Their modus operandi is to target motorcycles that do not have additional locks.
“Once the target is identified, one of the suspect’s friends will approach the motorcycle and interfere with the key switch connection and make modifications to the original wire before connecting some other wires to the main switch to start the motorcycle,” he said.
Background checks found that the suspects, who tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine, had prior records related to substance abuse.
Supt Nixon said the suspects are being investigated under Section 379A of the Penal Code and will be charged in court in the near future.
The public are advised to come forward and make a police report if they have any information regarding any crimes by contacting Bintulu district police headquarters (IPD) operations room at 086-318304.
