KUCHING: Kota Samarahan district police chief DSP Lee Chong Chern said good cooperation from the community, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and local communities are needed to address social issues, especially the issue of substance abuse.
“Such problems have become more challenging day-by-day due to rapid development taking place in Kota Samarahan.
“With increasing population, traffic, social and drug issues are becoming increasingly alarming,” he said during the Kota Samarahan IPD dinner with the media at Benson Seafood on Friday.
Although police could take enforcement actions and make arrests, they needed the cooperation from the community and NGOs in order to solve the social and substance abuse issues, Lee added.
“Otherwise, people will see that we are only detaining them (the offenders) temporarily, and if there is no support from their families, there is no guarantee they will not repeat the same mistake,” he said.
He said the offenders must have a strong resolve to change their way of life.
Lee thanked the media for working with the police on handling crime and social issues.
Meanwhile, the ceremony also saw Lee’s contribution to the Kota Samarahan IPD women’s netball team that won the Sarawak Police Commissioner Cup 2019 competition.
The Kota Samarahan IPD women’s team successfully completed all stages of the competition involving 15 teams over the course of two days (Nov 30 to Dec 1).
In addition, the team also won two of the best categories of the match: Dewi Christy was the best player and Corporal Wong Sung Wei was the best scorer.
