KUCHING: Kuching district police officers are able to visit counsellors if they face any issues of mental health.
Kuching district police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah informed that police officers are encouraged to go for counselling sessions under a registered and qualified counsellor.
“We have a registered counsellor, who is also qualified and makes sure that the officers are in a good emotional capacity.
“The counsellors also constantly supervise the police officer’s emotional capacity, they help to provide assistance in managing this area of the police’s emotional state of capacity,” he said.
He was speaking to reporters after officiating at the ‘Sentuhan Kasih’ programme at PIBAKAT in Jalan Ridgeway here yesterday.
Adding further, he said that there are programmes under the designated counsellors for early interventions to be taken to assist the police officers.
“This would help them (the police officers) and avoid negative effects from happening to their families and also when they are working,” he added.
He was responding to a question regarding Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail’s comment on Thursday (March 30) that loneliness, health and marital issues as well as adapting to a new working environment are factors contributing towards stress and suicidal tendencies among the police force.
Ahsmon said that thanks to the counsellors and comprehensive training modules under the Kuching district police, the Kuching police have not face any severe mental health issues.
