MERADONG: The draw of the illegal sport – cockfighting – proved costly for five locals when they were rounded up for their alleged involvement in a cockfighting session at an open area last Saturday (July 6).
Meradong police chief DSP Sekam Anoi said a team from the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) conducted the operation along Jalan Stubah-Tanjung Manis, here.
Upon arrival, the team discovered the open area had been turned into an illegal cockfighting arena, and surrounded the area before raiding.
“The presence of the police caught the group of men off guard, and they scrambled into a nearby forest to escape. However, their attempt was short-lived as they were swiftly arrested.
“Also seized during the raid were three live roosters, three dead roosters and various gambling equipment,” he said, adding that the suspects along with the seizures were taken to the CID office for further action.
The case is being investigated under Section 3(1) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1962.
Sekam advised the public not to engage in cockfighting activities as stern actions would be taken against those involved.
