KUCHING: Police have arrested a local man for allegedly stealing a 15.43-metre long telecommunication cable in Petra Jaya yesterday (Mar 10).
Acting Kuching deputy police chief Supt Merbin Lisa said the 26-year-old suspect was arrested around 2.50 am by a counter aggressive team (CAT) and the Gita crime prevention team.
The suspect is believed to have been actively involved in telecommunication cable thefts in Petra Jaya.
“Also seized from him was a Yamaha LC 135 motorcycle, a set of keys, a roll of telecommunication cable, a helmet, a sickle blade, a cutter, and a pair of slippers.
“The estimated losses incurred due to cable damage amount to RM3,000.
“The suspect is being remanded until Mar 13 to facilitate investigations under Section 379 of the Penal Code,” he said.
Background checks showed that the suspect, who tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine, had nine prior records related to crime and drugs.
Merbin pointed out that further investigations are ongoing to determine if the suspect acted alone or in a group, and his involvement in other cable theft cases previously reported in Petra Jaya.
