KUCHING: City police seized 37 boxes of illicit cigarettes from a factory during an operation codenamed ‘Ops Kontraban’ yesterday (Feb 19).
Acting on public tip-offs and intelligence, a team from the Kuching district police headquarters (IPD) raided the factory in Muara Tabuan, here.
Kuching police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah said a 29-year-old local man was also picked up at the scene.
The raiding team managed to find boxes of various branded cigarettes inside the premises, estimated around RM80,000.
He said the suspect will be remanded to facilitate investigations. The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967, which carries up to five years’ imprisonment and a fine up to RM100,000 upon conviction.
